NUST vs FAST vs GIKI — which is right for your CS degree?

Entry tests — three different games

  • NUST NET: multiple series per year; you can attempt more than once and your best score counts. Aggregate: 75% NET + 15% FSc + 10% Matric.
  • FAST: its own admission test (or accepts NU-style SAT/NTS routes); merit weights the test and FSc roughly equally — strong math is decisive.
  • GIKI: its own engineering-style admission test with heavy math/physics; merit is dominated by test performance.
  • Strategy: the tests reward different profiles. Memorisation-strong students often do relatively better on NET; problem-solving-heavy students on GIKI/FAST tests. Sit at least two of the three.

Cost & campus reality

  • NUST: public-sector fee tier, large Islamabad campus (H-12), hostels available — usually the lowest all-in cost of the three.
  • FAST: private mid-tier fees, city campuses (Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar, CFD, Multan) — commuting from home can cut costs dramatically.
  • GIKI: highest fee tier plus mandatory residential costs (remote Topi, KP campus) — budget for the full package, and check its merit scholarships.
  • Confirm current fee schedules from each university's official fee page before deciding — they change annually.

Reputation & outcomes for CS specifically

FAST has the strongest pure-CS industry pipeline reputation — its graduates are heavily represented across Pakistani software houses and international remote roles. NUST offers the broadest overall platform (research labs, exchange programs, brand recognition across all fields, strong CS placement). GIKI's small residential cohort produces an unusually tight alumni network with strong engineering fundamentals.

For a student targeting software jobs or remote international work immediately after graduation, all three clear the bar. Differentiate on: which test you can actually top, total cost you can sustain for 4 years, and whether you thrive in a residential bubble (GIKI/NUST hostel) or city life (FAST).

Decision checklist

  1. Compute your realistic aggregate for each (use our NUST and FAST calculators) — eliminate any where you're clearly below last-cycle merit.
  2. Model 4-year total cost (tuition + hostel/commute + inflation) against family budget.
  3. If two remain tied, visit both campuses — the environment difference is bigger than any ranking difference.
  4. Apply to all still-viable options; entry-test results routinely surprise in both directions.

By raw selectivity, NUST CS (SEECS) merit positions are the most competitive because of applicant volume. But 'hardest' is personal: each test rewards a different skill profile, which is why attempting multiple tests is the rational strategy.

Is GIKI worth the extra cost for CS?
